Project Brief:
Physical + Digital Zine / Photobook.
Why:
As a photographer there's always been a great satisfaction in having my work printed and having physical copies of my photos, I realized over time that this was due to my growing disillusionment with photography and photos in general. I'm a jaded grumpy old man who doesn't believe in the power of an image anymore. Perhaps as René Magritte and semiotics would say that photos are merely symbols of something that exists or existed, representations that point your mind to something. When you print a photo though you create something entirely new, a dialogue between physicality and symbolism if you will.
As a disillusioned photographer who doesn't really believe that a picture is worth a thousand words, I am particularly interested in photo books, zines, pieces of work that put photos in conversation with other mediums and contexts. I'm very interested in exploring how we can transform traditional forms of media by implementing innovative technologies, in this case, a photo book that has an accompanying web application that detects what page is open and displays accompanying music/visuals/ etc on the screen. A traditional piece of art that doubles as an interface for a technological multi-sensorial experience.
How:
Luckily I'm not the first person to do something like this, Waldek Węgrzyn's fine arts diploma project was the Elektro library, a physical book interface for the computer. Allegedly based on the seminal works and manifesto of El Lissitzky who envisioned a world where traditional mediums would be enhanced and evolved with electricity.
